The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his triumph in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his rivals, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for public city functions, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his humble Astoria home.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
