Martin Compston are set to reprise their roles in the popular police drama

The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
