Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the location of where the images originated relied on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
