Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to continue the legacy and commitment of the family owners has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is built upon, featuring a significant range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.

The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
