Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
He remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the potential of the company, and eagerly await observing their development".
Summers, who formerly headed the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed emails revealed that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it understood his choice to depart.
"We value his many contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," OpenAI stated.
Political Context
This news follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on this week to pass a measure that would require the US justice department to release its files on the case.
The legislation will then head to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has said he plans to approve the bill, after changing his view on the issue following pushback from his followers.
Message Details
A batch of Epstein-related messages released by the House Oversight Committee days ago included numerous well-known personalities in the billionaire's former circle, without indicating any illegal behavior by those figures.
The communications showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often trying to connect the official to influential international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were released with the general audience, he expressed he took "complete accountability for my poor choice to continue interacting with Mr Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to rebuild trust and repair connections with the people most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers occupied high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties previously on this week, he stated he would maintain his educational duties.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal think tank in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was no longer connected with the institution.
The former official became part of the leadership of the AI company, which makes the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
