Bluefin Fish Fetches Historic Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A massive bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages restaurants domestically and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna brings a prosperous start," remarked the business owner, a regular figure at the annual new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is noted for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.
Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "surprised at the winning bid," adding, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price soared rapidly."
This new acquisition exceeds his own record purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Even after once saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his own record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically known for exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which announced the fish would be featured at its eateries nationwide.
The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction concluded.
"I sense like I've started the year in a positive way after consuming something so lucky as the year begins," said one elated patron.
