Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this charming family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
